Most homeowners who call us have already picked the spot: the slab off the back slider, a corner of the deck, the grass by the pool. The question left is whether it bolts to the house.
Short answer. An attached pergola hangs off a ledger board bolted through your siding into the band joist, needs only two outer posts on footings, and is the simpler of the two builds for a typical 12×16 in Jacksonville. A freestanding pergola carries four to six posts on its own footings, costs roughly 20 percent more for the same square footage, and puts no fasteners through your weather barrier. Attach it when the wall framing can take a ledger and you want the space to feel like part of the house. Go freestanding when the wall is stucco, when the soffit sits low, or when the pergola lands more than a couple of feet off the house.
The short version: attached costs less and eats less yard, but every attached pergola lives or dies on one detail, the ledger connection and its flashing. Freestanding avoids that risk entirely and can go anywhere, at the price of two more footings.
We cut the siding back, lay self-adhered membrane over the sheathing, bolt the ledger into the band joist (the framing that rings your floor system), then flash the top with metal Z-flashing tucked behind the siding, so water sheds out over the ledger instead of behind it.
Skip that flashing and nothing happens for two or three rainy seasons. Jacksonville gets about 52 inches of rain a year, and an unflashed ledger wicks water into the band joist until someone finds soft floor inside.
Stucco over frame, vinyl over foam sheathing and brick veneer all make a sealed ledger harder than it is worth, so we go freestanding.
Our soil is sand. It drains beautifully and grips almost nothing when wind tries to pull a post out of it, which is why the governing load on a pergola here is uplift, not weight.
Footings typically run 12 to 24 inches across and 24 to 36 inches deep, deeper than people expect for a structure this light. Post bases are hot-dip galvanized, or 316 stainless within about three miles of the ocean or the Intracoastal, where standard hardware commonly bleeds rust down the posts inside a year.
An attached pergola shares one side of its load path with the house, so you pour two footings instead of four or more.

What matters is a continuous load path, roof to rafters to beams to posts to footings, with rated connectors at every joint. Attached borrows the house structure on one side; freestanding is self-contained and easier to engineer.
The roof drives the rest: open slats let wind through, while a solid or louvered roof turns the pergola into a wing and multiplies uplift. One rule: pergola posts land on framing or on their own footings, never on decking boards.
Decking is 1 inch of composite or 5/4 pine spanning 16 inches, sized for people spread across an area. A pergola post concentrates 600 to 1,500 pounds into a 6 inch square, then reverses in a storm and pulls up. A post base lagged to the deck surface is decoration.
Existing deck footings were sized for deck live load, not pergola uplift, so on older decks we add footings rather than reuse them. The decks and patios we build are designed around the pergola from day one.
Over a concrete patio, a 4 inch residential slab will not anchor a post against uplift by itself, so we core through and pour a footing beneath it.
