By the time most people call us, they have already decided they want a real roof over the patio rather than open slats. What they have not decided, and what nobody on the internet seems to explain, is which shape that roof should be.
We build three: flat, gable and hip. Each one changes how the structure handles wind, where the rain goes, how tall the space feels underneath, and what has to happen on the engineered drawings. This is how we walk through it on a site visit.
The short version. A flat roof keeps a low profile and tucks under a second-story window line. A gable patio cover gives you height, an open ceiling and a look that reads as part of the house. A hip roof gives up some headroom for a shape that sheds rain and wind on all four sides. On a Jacksonville lot, the wind and the rain usually decide it before the aesthetics do.
Flat, or shed. One plane. On an attached structure it is a lean-to, sloping away from the house so water runs off the outside edge. On a freestanding one it still carries a slight pitch, because a truly flat roof in Florida is a pond. This is the lowest profile of the three and the simplest to frame.
Gable. Two planes meeting at a ridge, with a triangular open end at each gable. It is a peaked, pitched roof for a taller ceiling and a more architectural look, and it is the shape most people picture when they think of a covered patio. On our pergolas the gable can be open-truss underneath, which is a big part of its appeal.
Hip. Four planes, sloping on all sides toward a central ridge or point, with no vertical gable ends. It sits lower and calmer than a gable of the same footprint and is the shape we use most on pavilions. Sloped on all four sides, it gives a lower profile that sheds rain and wind on every side.
We build flat and gable rooflines on pergolas, and gable and hip on pavilions. We do not build open-top or slatted roofs on a pavilion, so if you are reading this for a pavilion, the choice is gable or hip.
This is the section that matters most here, and it is where a roof shape stops being a style choice.
Any solid roof carries far more wind load than an open pergola. On our pavilions the framing and footings are sized for that, and the same is true of a solid-roofed pergola. What changes between shapes is where the load goes.
A gable has two vertical end walls. In a storm those triangular ends are what the wind pushes on, and the ridge and the rafters have to carry that push down into the posts and footings. The open ends are also where wind can get under the roof plane and lift. That is not a reason to avoid a gable; it is the reason a gable gets a ridge beam, rated connectors at every rafter, and footings sized to the uplift on the drawings. A gable that was framed like a shed roof is the one that does not survive.
A hip has no end walls. Every face slopes, so wind meets an incline from any direction rather than a flat vertical surface. Uplift is spread more evenly around the structure, which is why hip roofs are the conservative choice on an exposed lot and on larger footprints.
A flat roof presents the least surface to a side wind but the most to uplift from below, especially on an attached lean-to where the low edge faces the open yard. The ledger connection to the house and the outer post line both matter more on a flat roof than people assume.
None of these is unsafe when it is engineered for it. We stamp every structure to Florida wind code, and our post on hurricane-rated pergolas covers how that engineering works. The practical point is that the shape you choose changes what the engineer has to size, and a quote that does not change with the roofline has not accounted for it.
Jacksonville gets its rain in volume, in the afternoon, in summer. A solid roof has to move that water somewhere on purpose.
Flat roofs need enough pitch to drain. A lean-to that slopes away from the house pushes everything to the outer edge, which means a gutter or a drip line you have planned for. On a sandy lot, a roof edge dumping onto bare ground will dig its own trench in one wet season.
Gables shed to two sides, so two edges get water and the gable ends stay dry. If one of those edges faces the pool or a walkway, that is where a gutter goes.
Hips shed to four sides, which spreads the runoff and is the easiest to gutter all the way around. It is also the most forgiving if you skip gutters entirely, because no single edge is taking half the roof.
Whichever shape you pick, think about where the water ends up before you think about the color of the shingles. A roof that drains onto a paver patio pitched toward the house has created a problem it was supposed to solve.
Under a solid roof in July, the shape decides whether the space is comfortable or an oven.
A gable’s open-truss ceiling gives you height. Hot air rises into the peak and away from the seating, ceiling fans have room to work, and the space feels like a room rather than a carport. If you plan to add fans, lighting or a tongue-and-groove ceiling, the gable is the shape that shows them off.
A hip is lower at the edges and gathers to a point rather than a ridge, so you get less volume overhead. It still ventilates well, and a fan at the center works, but it feels more sheltered than airy.
A flat roof is the lowest of the three and holds heat closest to the seating. It is the right answer where a taller roof would block a window, run into a soffit or overhang, or exceed what the HOA allows. It is the wrong answer if the goal is a cool, open room.
If the structure attaches to the house, the roofline has to meet the house cleanly.
A lean-to is the natural attached shape: the high edge ledgers to the wall and the roof slopes away. It works well under a single-story eave and badly under a low one, where there is not enough height left to get pitch.
An attached gable runs its ridge into the wall, which needs a wall tall enough to receive it and flashing done properly where the roof meets the house. It is the most house-like of the attached options and the one that most often needs the house’s own roofline considered.
Freestanding structures can take any of the three, which is one reason a pavilion in the yard is usually gable or hip. Our attached vs. freestanding piece covers the ledger and footing side of that decision.
On a slab-on-grade block ranch with a low hip roof, a tall gable patio cover can look like it belongs to a different house. On a two-story with a prominent front gable, a hip pavilion out back can look timid. Matching the pitch and the profile of the existing roof is the single easiest way to make a structure look original rather than added.
Many Jacksonville and St. Johns County communities put that expectation in writing. Nocatee, Fleming Island and most of the newer subdivisions have architectural review that looks at roof profile, pitch and materials. We finish pavilions with a standing-seam metal roof or architectural shingles, and matching the shingle to the house is usually the approval path of least resistance. Get the roofline approved before the drawings are finalized, not after.
Because the shape changes the loads, it changes the engineering. In general terms:

By the end of that walk the roofline is usually obvious, and it is rarely the one the homeowner arrived with. Whichever it is, the structure is built to it: powder-coated aluminum pergolas, wood pergolas or a pavilion, engineered and permitted to Florida code.
